Are long form articles considered a different type of note or are they just markdown enabled?

They are a different, long form is a event kind 30023. In addition to the markdown, they are editable and can have metadata such as a title and summary. You can also create a kind 30024 which is a draft of a long form article. They are meant to be distinct from kind 1 (short notes) events.
