Debian is my preferred distro.

Install from server and add a DE.

No corporate nonsense, very wide software support, upstream of Ubuntu and Mint, stable, and non-free firmware now works out of the box.

The only reason not to run it is if you're a developer, for everyone else there is Flatpak and AppImage.
