Depends from where and what the occasion is.
If out with adult friends and no kids at a place in Chicago or Detroit that is KNOWN for deep dish- deep dish.
Pretty much any other time - thing base.
Deep dish is messy enough and not cheesy enough that it’s just not fun trying to give to kids or if you’re having an informal meal.
Deep dish is for the classy carb addicts.
I find some deep ones to be too doughy though

That’s fair. There has to be a proper bread to sauce ratio and a crispy bottom.
Exactly, it’s a hard one to get right but when it’s right it’s awesome
