As a child we are all narcissistic in nature...we depend on the outside to survive (mother / caregivers).

Then the process of separation-individuation starts.

A person with NPD traits, in a simplistic manner, never finishes this process.

That is why, they see the world and other people, as extensions of themself's and not separate.
