Yeah, narrative is really important for me, as well.
Memoir-44 is nice, as you are re-inacting historical battles, so the narrative is there. It is also a light wargame and it is pretty quick to play. What really appeals to me is the orders card system. There are three lanes on the board and cards in your hand can only affect units in the lane(s) they describe. It is a good fog of war mechanic, but it keeps you out of analysis paralysis, which I struggle with, and keeps the game moving.
A really good indie game that has strong narrative and can be played co-op or solo is Space Station Zero. Vince Venturella and Adam Roper (YouTube hobbyists) developed it. It's a lot of fun and is miniatures agnostic, so you can use whatever you happen to have on hand.
