When you're dependent of an income which is affected by others' perception of you, your behavior is affected overtime. Even when one resists it. All our livelihoods depend on that in most instances, I'm sure there are exceptions, hence the existence of so many assholes in the world.

It may be innate to the majority of us just from the fact that we try learn quickly as little children what will hopefylully get us acknowledged and accepted by those who are meant to care for us.
