Nah. Religion is a by product of morals. Some people don't have morals, so religion became necessary.

Nonsense morals like let's kill a virgin on a rock so it'll rain ....

That's where the state coopts religion. Or religion coopts the state. Either way, the nonsense exists to protect power.
