I heard today that starting last year there’s a shortage of high school level football referees in my neck of the woods, and that this year the shortage is even more acute.

Have the same thing with hockey here and other sports.
Covid killed sports and cancelled games. Refs went on to other things. Now they don’t want to come back because parents are nuts and it ain’t worth the headache. Hockey pays $50+++ per game and they still can’t get people. Puts kids at risk because good refs keep order. Lots of games get out of control now. Sad.
Interesting… I had a feeling this could not just be happening here and that it had to be a more widespread phenomenon.
It’s going to take quite a bit of time to fix all these distortions, if possible at all in some cases 🫤🫤
The way those folks are treated, often by parents, could be making some of them think twice as to whether it’s worth it.
