Yes its a huge wart in the protocol, I don’t know the solution. I’ve been just keeping my contact list small and unfollowing people who haven’t posted in a long time.

The thing that concerns me even more is race conditions. What if you're using more than one Nostr client? Every client has to stay in sync, and it could overwrite your entire following list so easily!

Thank you, but I stick to one client with this account, so there is no issue there. Plus, the problem went away as soon as I changed from Testflight Damus to the App Store version. I also have not had ANY issues for several weeks. The number of relays I am running can handle the 3,000 plus people I follow no problem.
