IIUC Protonmail, Tutanota, and friends are just proprietary messaging platforms that do normal email on the side

- Web clients allow for targeted breaks (see Lavabit).

- Normal people might believe conversations with users on other services (even other encrypted services) are safe.

- If the service drives them to use PGP for interoperable encryption, all their metadata is unprotected.
