Their economic system is more "government run" than communist in a traditional sense. The ones that are still around had to learn hard from how the Soviets fucked up, or how poorly even more isolationist NK is doing.
China is far more capitalist than you'd expect from the term "communism", even though it's pretty much a given that if you run a big business you're a CCP party member.
