Why so sad?
Discussion
You can’t help but wonder why this child is so sad – that’s exactly the question the painting raises. The young person appears to be hiding behind geometric shapes, and it’s unclear whether they are there by choice, perhaps due to something terrible that has happened, or if they are trapped there against their will. This ambiguity, whether it’s a voluntary retreat or forced confinement, makes the tears especially poignant. It invites us to think about the possible reasons for this sorrow and the broader human experience. It seems the painting was created precisely to evoke such questions and provoke thought.
