They weren't necessarily late, they just wanted to push things to the limit, FAFO before the soviets did. Then they had to continue operations underground because it wasn't a practical use of taxpayer dollars.

That's usually a good rule of thumb/mindset

Sometimes I go with: if i can think it, someone else most likely already has and may have the ability to do it or put it into action.

Yea. Too many declassified docs stacked up, FOIA requests, wikileaks and dumps. It all adds up.... truth is stranger than fiction (not to sound cliché)
