Literally an effort of substantial proportions, one I think equally as important as bitcoin, and bitcoin can help us proceed down.

Not easy, but back to my great grandmothers way of life is my intention, combined with the sustainability technology of the modern era, will hopefully allow the next generation to succeed in this effort.

Yes I think we can achieve new ways of living in technological modernity that do not strip the environment, pillage our health, and debase truth. But I like to approached this as a forward looking creative exercise of newness - rather than a nostalgic “return to the old ways” - I certainly, would not look to return to my great grandmothers way of life…but I can learn from her history and apply it to today.

With food, unfortunately, that is the only reality. Food is not like other things. There are ways to improve food using technology, but it does not happen in a quick manner. Tools to help produce are useful, but weed killer and bug spray are examples of tools that are slowly killing us.

Food is old, food is how our bodies evolve, food is slow.

It’s not about “returning to the past” so much as it is about embracing historical methods of food cultivation, pre industrialization of food. Everything about the last century of food production is pretty much a long term negative for our health. The only historical reference we have for healthy food is pre world war industrial methods.

Modern sustainability technology like energy production and water purification will be useful, but heirloom seeds, historical bug prevention methods, permaculture techniques all need to be reset to pre industrial ways in order to move forward with a clear mind and new methods. Otherwise we will lose the last chance we have to remember historical food production techniques and be forever condemned to a “dark age” of food production.

Example- plastic bags prevent bug encroaching on stored foods, but also leach chemicals into the food.

Glass jars or clay pots are therefor the only method to store grain long term.

These are our great grandparents methods.

So how would this scale to keep pace with todays world? What would need to be rethought / rebuilt? And what / are there liberated or democratized technologies that help us get there at scale?

Yah it’s a great question.

My thought process is that the primary scaling method needs to be similar to bitcoin, decentralized infrastructure. Particularly home gardening techniques that can supply a family and provide extra. Canning techniques to provide duration.

New technologies that can help with this are things like LED lighting, hydroponic methods, distributed electrical generation like solar panels or wind turbines, battery technologies.

An example, in 3-4 weeks I can grow from seed 18-24 heads of lettuce in a 4’x4’x6’ high space, using LED lighting and a circular water system with minimal added nutrients.

This can be automated using simple raspberry pi type computers, and other electrically powered pumps and sensors.

Mushroom cultivation is another good source where production can be localized to the household level, and automated, with quick turnaround between crops. Chickens are another example of localized food sources.

When combined with more traditional permaculture methods, a localized economy can develop where individuals produce beyond their consumption rate and cooperate with others to exchange goods to fill out their nutritional needs.

Basic description here but gives you the idea if my thoughts and direction for my own future.

We have a small garden out back in movable (plastic 😱) containers but it’s a start. Super admire what you’ve shared of your set up - I think people would be really interested in hearing about this / your story of how you got to this place and skillset.

As you can see, I’m using reused plastic stuff all over in this setup, and since plastic is going to be around forever, using it to create containers and grow food is a viable use case.

Some of it is less usable for food growing then other types, but generally it’s going to be a great way to help people set up cheap home setups in the future that will last a long time and be resilient.
