They tore down part of the wall of Ardvreck Castle, dating from 1590, to create a stone path. Authorities have condemned this "appalling" act, which further weakens this historic monument. Volunteers have repaired what they could. (BBC)

It is unlikely the atypical 'dry stonewall' (seen all over Northern England, the borders - my native Northumberland - and Scotland) was from 1590.

It'll be lucky to be 100 years old for that matter, as the harsh weather, animals and people mean these need to be maintained.

Appalling vandalism, nonetheless.
