How do some users have one of those check marks? how do you get one?

Its a nip-05 or "nostr address" It's a little file you host on a web server. There are several services that do this for you Or if you have a domain that you would like to use, you can do it yourself.

whichever one you want. I host one on my server but its paid on sovbit.host

It’s different from the Twitter blue check. The check lets you know the user has published an address to use as an alias for their long public key. Ultimately it involves social trust in getting to know users first and learning that this alias represents them. Then the check mark has more meaning.
