Can someone please help me understand Ordinals?

Looking at an ordinals explorer like hiro:

It seems that most(?) of these are fairly useless pixel images of cartoon rats or some other NFT.

Serious question: what's the point? Why would someone add a goofy image to the blockchain?

I don't get it, but there has to be a reason?
