It supports nixos for installing applications, yes, but the core system is made immutable via bootable partitions updated and rotated via atomic transactions.

Yes, it is a novel Linux distro. You can install apps from any distro at all due to it's deep container integration with the desktop environment. Been using it as a daily driver for a year or so. Pleasure.

Seems like a simpler to use nixos. Will check it out.
