I think that with batteries and vehicles are concerned energy storage density is the key concern, followed by charging rates. With diesel, renewable diesel is a decent solution in modern SCR emissions systems (controlling NOX) and if the Atkinson cycle was applied to a diesel engine with hybrid energy recovery capability that’s probably the best humanity can do right now. Infrastructure plays a big role in the possibilities, liquid fuel infrastructure is ubiquitous, while the electrical grid is taxed near capacity already, and while driving an EV may feel green, if the electrons you put in the tank come from a coal or oil fired power plant you’re definitely not helping. The key climate wise is to stop pulling carbon out of the ground and putting it in the atmosphere (CO2). Renewable liquid fuels largely address that issue.
