What is your preferred wallet to onboard pre-coiners?

For me it is Strike (for now).

“What? Are you crazy? Blasphemy! Traitor! This is not self sovereign” I hear you scream.

But hear me out. I think I have a point.

When I'm sending small amounts, I don't want my wallet to open channels and I don't want to use bitcoin's base layer.

Why not? Well, because of the fees, of course.

Imagine you've never had contact with Bitcoin before and then you experience higher fees than with your bank. Or the payment doesn't work because the channels don't open right away or the payment routes haven't been found.

You'll laugh and never think about those "bitcoins" again, right?

But why Strike?

Well, there are VERY good reasons NOT to use Strike.

Aside from the lack of sovereignty (which defeats bitcoin's purpose), it's the lack of privacy.

You have to agree to their privacy policy, which means you don't have any privacy at all. They collect everything they can (or are required to).

You could theoretically give them a fake email address and a fake name and still use the Lightning Wallet, but in that case I would just go with WoS. They won't want anything and you'll have exactly the same features.

But there is one feature in Strike that makes it (imo) worth recommending as your first bitcoin wallet.

You can buy and sell bitcoin directly from within the app.

Yes, you'll need to do KYC with them.

Yes, you'll need to link your bank account.

Yes, you'll have to sell your soul to the devil.

But there are two reasons why I think it's worth the trade-off.

Firstly, Strike only supports bitcoin. So newbies cannot buy Doge or fucking Solana. No shitcoins, just Bitcoin!

Second, you can SELL Bitcoin STRAIGHT AWAY.

"What? You're an idiot," I hear you screaming again.

But think about it for a second. This is a game changer.

Let's say you're selling coconuts on the street and you've never heard of bitcoin. Some crazy person (like me) offers to pay you in bitcoin.

If you have a wallet that can accept bitcoin and immediately convert it to your favourite fiat shitcoin, you are much more likely to accept the offer. Because you are stupid and not a laser eye maxi - yet.

But at least you now have a point of contact with bitcoin.

Fast forward to the bull market, when it's time for bitcoin to skyrocket again, you'll realise you were a stupid fuck to sell that precious bitcoin someone paid you with a while back.

Next time, you'll keep it. And now you are interested.

And because it is so easy to buy with Strike, you will buy some "just in case it catches on" ;)

What do you think of my argument?

Am I wrong?

Would you agree?

Let me hear your thoughts.

Strike is still not available in Europe.

At the moment I recommend nostr:npub1sqzr42dj8vx32yd5jcvvl3ytux45kl0etgf6y2ymjvmd7lqmuwmqk9vk7v works great

Phoenix start them with self custody

Too expensive sometimes and not 100% reliable though. But it’s the next step for me after Strike

I go out of m'y way to get them Phoenix.

I gave 20$ of sats to two randos at work

That’s a lot of data sats!

By the for Strike I think people need to understand how powerful self custody is.

It's worth paying the SATs for mining fees

I agree. Also recommending Strike now.

The new Phoenix charging model feels like they've moved into monetisation mode. And I don't trust WoS any more, after they capitulated to regulation.

Use phoenix instead, at least its true Bitcoin

Good points. I like Strike.

I have two types of Bitcoin ... hot and cold. COLD is deep storage. Hot is money im likely to spend in the next 2 months. But I like storing it in Bitcoin. Especially in this crazy environment.

My Fold card has the same features. When i send money to it ... it shows as "Sutton Bank." Kinda low key.

cashapp and strike!
