We can give everyone on nostr a cashu wallet directly in-client the moment they create their key pair. That person can then get zapped right away with actual sats. Then, they can take their sats to their own wallet when they're ready.
Not sure what's so hard to understand there.

Try to onboard my former school mate (girl) :) and still so much to explain that nostr is just the protocol and they need to use one of the apps, like Amethyst and to add their lightnig wallet they need to add it to the field LN (what stands for Lightning wallet but most don’t get this when you are new). Also nostr:npub1getal6ykt05fsz5nqu4uld09nfj3y3qxmv8crys4aeut53unfvlqr80nfm invite, she was waiting to get a link. Which LN wallet to use etc. So we think in our bubble it very easy but it’s not for the average artist/content creator. Luckily I can help like many cool other here helped me to start. Once you are in the fun starts 🕳️🐰
All understandable. Nobody should have to try to understand LN on day one, that's crazy. I was in bitcoin for years before I even started wrapping my head around it. This is why we can and should abstract away setting up of payment methods, and is exactly the reason why I am excited about Cashu. Learning can be deferred. Not ignored, but deferred for gradual easing into various concepts IF the person wants to know how it works.
True and that is happening she straight wants to learn more. When just send her some sats she is like wow cool. It’s just this kind of reward system what helps people to get excited to learn more. I think people are confused why this is being hailed as a big deal because this has been possible with a custodial lightning wallet since nostr began and several clients have in-app wallets already.
I have a pretty minimal understanding, but I thought the cashu value is on the privacy/offline spending side of things. I’m not sure I understand how it changes onboarding at all.
ecash/cashu is a interesting tool, the work that have been done on the protocol and the wallets is huge, certainly the applications need more exploration.
But what you transfer are not "actual sats", they are tokens. And when "they're ready" after joining with a random client, the supposed backing sats could be vanished. We need to stress the token nature and the fully custodial and rug pull risks, if we care about Bitcoin, and Nostr.
Personally, I see more interesting applications for families and small groups, where the trust and the teaching while onboarding, so the risks, can be properly managed.
Honestly, hearing that you automatically have a “Bitcoin wallet” when you create a “Nostr account” will continue to drive many people away from ever trying something on Nostr.

Yup, I'm laughing at how everyone so causually recommended custodial Alby & WOS but get all confused with cashu ecash as if it is more complicated.
It has to be fully integrated from the start with solid UX. Making people use two or three apps and/or an external website to enable zaps is an unreasonable expectation.
Backups. Losing your Nostr privkey is an inconvience, but if sats are attached to it, then it's a tragedy.
