Today in 1940, 83 years ago: at the Kroll Opera House in Berlin (Nazi Germany) - within the framework of World War II - Adolf Hitler promoted twelve generals to the rank of Generalfeldmarschall (Field Marshal). It was the first time in World War II that Hitler appointed field marshals because of his military achievements and the only time he did so in a formal ceremony.
