grew up in a family where secrecy was the norm and I couldn't tell my parents anything, which was very painful but I learned how to endure that pain. it made me good a certain types of work and shaped me in some positive and negative ways.
one thing I've always told myself, even as a kid, was that when I had a family of my own, we'd never have to keep secrets from each other and I'd always be willing to take the time to listen and talk with my spouse and kids about anything.

Just know this, as a kid, I told myself to be the exact opposite of my father, because he didn't honor any of his husbandly and fatherly duties

yeah, seems to often be the case with inheritances. lots of wild stories out there about families ripped apart by greed over them. imo, if you've chosen your own identity and purpose in life, you're wealthier than any amount of money can make you.
