Look we don't have a lot of land (we had to build extra on water for feck sake) so houses were small (and still are and newly build homes are getting smaller and smaller due to lack of space) and live in the Netherlands has always been expensive and that's why we cheap as hell even 3, 4 centuries ago. So there ya go.
