While I think the bravery and honesty of protesters should not be overlooked, it would also be worthwhile to consider the possibility Israel/Mossad are trying to drag US into a conflict with Iran. Perhaps there will be a bombing of a significant religious site, then a very brutal crack down by Iran which gives pretense for US to get involved.
