What I wanna know is: does the actual population what to go to the front lines?

If so, legitimate. If not, same old cronies killing young people.

There's no "want" for soldiers. They take orders and execute them. That's the job description.

But that is the question. Ask a random person on the street: would YOU die in this war. If they say no, they have no legitimacy to ask anyone else.
