How do you buy an open source product? I'm talking about OpenAI interest in Google Chrome , why can't they just fork it?

Maybe they have some blobs copyrighted or maybe they bought the entire packages (employees included).

Don't think it's about the tech at all

They're not buying Chromium but a specific variant/build with its userbase (which is the biggest chunk on the internet) and all its metrics etc. They're buying a source of information to utilise and also access to a large group of people to shove their shitty product down their throats

Unless you were cheeky and it wasn't a serious question (in which case ignore me)

It was part serious, part sarcastic 😛 , but yeah they're buying the IP. Which is ironic since we know how they treat IP 😂

IP is bad when it's obstacle but IP is good when it can be weaponised for their own benefit. Classic

Chromium is open source, Chrome is proprietary and built on Chromium.

As well, licensing rights to the brand, and transfer of contracts and employees.

Disregard IP one day, buy up IP the next 😂
