GM ☀️

Why do we say GM?

Nostr represents a radical leap toward a freer, more dynamic internet. With Nostr we get absolute free speech, open competition, and genuine user autonomy.

On Nostr, we control our identities through cryptographic keys, so we can join any community we want without losing our followers, content, or voice.

And because the network relies on many independent “relays” rather than a single central server, there’s no single gatekeeper to censor or deplatform you.

By integrating Bitcoin’s Lightning Network for micropayments, Nostr opens new possibilities for creators and entrepreneurs. Imagine zapping someone a few cents for a clever post or paying directly for valuable insights—no middleman, no hidden fees. It transforms social media into a global marketplace of ideas and services, free from the advertising-driven business models that dominate Big Tech.

Nostr offers a blueprint for disrupting entrenched monopolies in the same way open-source software upended proprietary giants. Instead of complaining about Silicon Valley’s control, we can build a world where users own their data, creators earn directly from their audience, and innovation happens in the open. It’s a rare glimpse of real progress—one that puts individual freedom and entrepreneurial spirit front and center.

We’re witnessing the reemergence of a truly open internet. If you believe that tech should empower people rather than exploit them, Nostr is where you want to be spending your time. Nostr is the most promising and disruptive idea since Bitcoin.

And on Nostr we say GM.

For your information, this is what I shared (in French) on my Facebook page, for better or for worse :

Hello,

I wanted to inform you that I have recently turned to the Nostr platform (https://nostr.how/fr/get-started) after losing trust in X.com. I had already left Facebook since the ban on news sites [in Canada, for valid reasons].

Nostr is built on a key principle: the absence of censorship. This protocol allows users to control their identity, their posts, and their audience through cryptographic keys that belong to them, without relying on a central authority. Numerous “relays” (independent servers) ensure freedom of expression and act as a safeguard against potential censorship attempts.

Curious to better understand the political dynamics on Nostr, I observed some trends. My analysis is based on a limited sample, so it may not be entirely accurate.

Most users seem to align with a libertarian movement, often associated with the right. There is a strong presence of the “America First” movement, which advocates for economic protectionism, immigration restrictions, and strong nationalism, as well as moderate conservatives. On the fringes, a few white supremacists are also present, though they remain a minority.

Nostr is sometimes described as a “right-wing Bitcoin spam site filled with bad memes,” while others argue that it is “not right-wing enough.” A significant portion of the content reflects an American conservative perspective, often linked to the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement, which shares similarities with “America First” but with a populist dimension and a strong attachment to Donald Trump. The most discussed topics on the platform are Bitcoin, technology, and self-sufficiency (homesteading).

The community is generally welcoming and willing to help newcomers get familiar with the platform. However, the political uniformity can sometimes be a barrier for those seeking more diversity.

Regardless, I want to experiment with the Nostr protocol to see if it truly allows all perspectives to be heard. For example, I cut off a news feed that was 100% MAGA, but I tolerate another one that, while also MAGA, often reports factual information. Nostr is new to me, and the protocol promises that, even among predominantly right-wing (or left-wing) users, an opposing voice can still have a place. I want to see that for myself.
