Nostr relay on Start9 question.

I fear the answer is so simple I'm looking with "overkill" engaged.

I have the "Nostr RS Relay" installed and running on the Embassy Pro.

I add the relay name to Iris/Snort and saved.

is it working?

I used the wss:// link as the ws:// wouldn't work even though the wss

pop up warning "Use this URL to connect to your relay over LAN. Only for testing purposes."

but I see all the others as wss

I don't know the answer but I know who does and sent them this note and asked them to help you.

so yes, wss is the SSL version of ws

the local address on your start9 is encrypted, so locally, using the .local works under wss

but, you start9 is not accessible outside your network in that fashion

if you want to access outside your local ( same lan subnet ) .. you have to use the .onion address, which doesn't use ssl , hence just the ws

but ... if you want to access an onion relay from your nostr client, then you need to be on the Tor Network.

for instance, on my Android, I run orbit in VPN mode, and I chose, bitwarden, amethyst and plebstr, to run through orbit, giving me access to my onion hidden services.

clear as mud right? ask me questions :)

yup mud but I'm using a digger so lets GO!

okay so i just copied and pasted the ws xxxx .onion websocket url into the settings and this time it took (i'm sure user error before)

I see it with an 'inactive' indication (blank on iris / red on snort)

1 - how do I use my own relay correctly

2 - eventually how do I get friends on my relay

3 - then I'm going for paid but thats later... first storm the hill "wolverines"

1. you need to proxy your noster client through a tor VPN. if you're on a mobile device, use an app called orbot, I'm sure it exists on iOS as well, then there's an option in orbot, that lets you run it in VPN mode, and then choose what apps to run across it. if you're using a web client, use a tor browser, or a tour tab, if you will, in brave browser.

2. I assume you're running your relay in private mode, so you put your pub key in the configuration and start9? So you would add your friend's pub key in that same location.

Following. Setting up a relay on my embassy is on my to do list

The answer is simple.

On your #start9 server go to the nostr service and look at logs.

If you are connected to it, you’ll see it in th log when you post…

It’s another great way to #grownostr !!!!

I think start9 is my next big purchase. Been reading a lot about the embassy. Definitely like the ethos of the company

I can definitely recommend it. I was a bit hesitant at first because I wasn’t sure what I’d use it for besides running a BTC node, but I’ve been slowly replacing things I use that are hosted by others with an equivalent self hosted thing.

Go slowly, and don’t get rid of what you’re used to before you feel comfortable with managing the self hosted version. Make sure to reference the Start9 documentation whenever you get stuck, I found it to be very easy to follow and get everything set up. If you don’t already I’d recommend also picking up a spare hard drive or two to serve as backup storage, and back up the server often. The TOR connections are a bit troublesome at first, but I’ve found them to work pretty well once past the initial setup.

Hope the setup goes well for you!
