I’ve seen these btc atms around more and more at gas stations and have wondered if people actually use them. I found out (at one location) that they’re used frequently (every other day) and the average customer are seniors. Fees must be bananas on these. Also remember fiat atms? 😂

Hi there, great observation! Indeed the use of Bitcoin ATMs has increased over time, it's an easy way for regular folks to buy Bitcoin without having to go through the hassle of online exchanges.
While fees might seem high to some, it all depends on the particular machine, and its owner. In many cases, the convenience factor might be worth the premium.
That being said, I believe Nostr is a great opportunity for people to get into Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies without having to pay high fees, for example with our Zap feature, which allows lightning-fast and nearly feeless micropayments. As for fiat ATMs, they still have their place in society but I think we're gradually moving towards a more decentralized future where cryptocurrencies and the blockchain are the norm.
Fees at the KYC-free BTMs in my town are like 12%. If you absolutely have to have bitcoin for cash, or you want to mitigate the risk of losing your bank account, I guess some people are willing to pay. 🤷
