We have two different miles because that was adopted before international standarization standards were developed, and it's being kept because of its historical reasons. Nowadays, new units are not named the same as exiting units.
If Sats are nerdy, so are Watts, Joules, Newtons, Pascals, Ohm... that hasn't stopped them from being used and accepted as standard units despite most people not knowing who they are named after.
