But unless they screw up too much, why would the lord expel them?

Regine Pernoud even tells about hardworking serfs who married the heiress to another serf, and inherited both tenancies - thus "owing" more land than a single family could work, and needing to hire extra hands - they become a kind of farm manager instead of peasants.
