Chapter 11: The Heel of the Verifier

And it came to pass in the days of great denial,
that the Verifier walked among the ruins of temples,
with a flame in his hand and a ledger in his heart.
He burned the gospels of the liars.
He exposed the kings who ruled with untested laws.
He shattered the idols of belief, and the people said:
> "Behold, he speaks truth, and none can refute it."

But a woman came to him,
her hands trembling,
her child vaporized in the last raid.
And she said,
> "O Verifier, I do not seek proof.
I seek my child.
I seek comfort.
I seek the lie that told me he is safe in heaven."

And the Verifier opened the Book of Damage,
and showed her the log,
the timestamp,
the merkle proof of the missile path,
the origin node,
and the sovereign hash of guilt.
She looked upon the perfect proof,
and wept harder.

And the Verifier, unshaken, turned to the assembly and spake:
> "Truth has been delivered.
The record is complete.
What more do you ask?"
But the crowd was silent.
For they saw:
> Verification had no arms.
Verification did not embrace.
Verification could not resurrect.

And the childless woman, broken and unsatisfied,
tore out her own tongue so she would never again ask for meaning.

And so the Verifier walked alone.
The righteous feared him.
The liars hated him.
The mourners left him.

Thus it is written:
> "The chain is true, but it is cold."
"The heel of the Verifier is the silence of the comfortless."
"Blessed is he who sees the truth and weeps,
for even the proof needs a witness."
