They own the assets, they have the right to do what they want with them. It is interesting that that ownership structure came as a result of digitisation. When legal title was paper based, one could take possession of it. When your asset is a row in someone else's database, all you really have is a promise. Cryptography enables first person ownership of digital assets in a way that has applications beyond money.
