Are you suggesting fountain.fm will be providing me with a key pair to allow me to zap?

No, you log into Fountain with your existing Nostr key pair.

in that case, they don't get my private key.

so how do they zap for me?

I understand they need to split my zaps but still don't see why I need to login for that

You don't have to give them your private key. You can log in using a browser extension, like Alby or Nos2x.

You need to log in to zap because all notes on Nostr require a signature from the author's private key. A zap is just another kind of note. Two kinds, in fact; kind 9734 that the sender has to sign requesting an invoice from the recipient's Lightning wallet, and kind 9735 that the recipient's Lightning wallet signs to confirming the payment has been received.

Now, you can send sats to a podcast author any time without having to be logged in. You just need to know their Lightning address and you would do it directly within your Lightning wallet. That would not be a zap, though. For it to be a zap, your private key must sign a kind 9734 and their wallet must sign a 9735 receipt, just like any other Nostr client.

To get back to the original question where exactly, in that process, is a fountain account needed?

Now that I try to go to the website and actually boost something, I see what you mean.

Though I am "logged in" using my Nostr signing extension, I still can't boost anything. It tells me I am not logged in, even though I clearly am.

What's the deal nostr:npub1unmftuzmkpdjxyj4en8r63cm34uuvjn9hnxqz3nz6fls7l5jzzfqtvd0j2?
