Ursula K Le Guin - Left Hand of Darkness (different, but great, especially for reading aloud to someone else)

Neal Asher - Weaponized (recent military scifi I enjoyed a lot, quick paced but not too dumb)

Three military scifi classics: Forever war by Joe Haldeman, Ender‘s Game by Orson Scott Card and Old Man’s War by John Scalzi.

Richard Morgan - Altered Carbon + Market Forces

I hate to say it but I'd swap out forever war and insert Stainless Steel Rat or maybe Starship troopers

Have to agree on forever war, it carries weight because the author was a Vietnam vet, but Oldman's War was a fantastic

Stainless Steel Rat I did not know of, so I‘ll definitely look into it, thanks! Starship Troopers is great, but the equally great movie makes stuff complicated, and I wanted to keep it simple.

It's been over 20 years since I read it, so hopefully it holds up
