Stuff like that is why I hate all the security cams. Not only what I might install in my home but also my neighbors cam stream to "the cloud". We live in a panopticon.

Yeah. My take 🌶 is DON'T. Don't install modern digital cameras and voice driven "assistance" … even "smart" TVs and other appliances in your home.

Just.DON'T.

If you must, then build a decent isolated segment for those devices, firewall them off from your general purposes computing, and from the Internet. If you don't have the requisite infosec skills for that … hire a reputable consultant.

Or, you know, just give up and live in a glass bubble.

Yeah, this "give up" part is all too tempting. I was at a friend's house and after hours of talking about also topics like Bitcoin and surveillance, he showed me how he can turn on the light with just his voice. 🤦‍♂️

hahaha. discouraging indeed...

doesn't look good to me, I very much prefer to use my hands

20 points if you can turn off the lights by throwing a shoe.

🤣

I totally want all this home automation. My assistant should dimm the light when appropriate even without me saying so but of course without any of the data going off premise.

there are some open source alternatives to some of this. at least for things to act as a "home hub." so you could hook up your wifi lightbulbs or something to it and handle the automation there instead.

this is one that i've wanted to try out: https://www.openhab.org/

Key is that you have to have a wifi without internet to make sure the microphones don't phone home. I bought some cams and they all want me to set them up with the convenient Android app :(

damn that's shady AF
