Born on this day...Gaston Lachaise

(March 19, 1882 in Paris – October 18,) 1935 in NYC was a French-born sculptor, active in the early 20th century.

A native of Paris, he was most noted for his female nudes such as Standing Woman. Gaston Lachaise was taught the refinement of European sculpture while living in France. He met a young American woman, Isabel Nagel, and the pair moved to America, where his craft reached maturity and he was influenced and inspired by American ways. Lachaise helped redefine the female nude in a new and powerful manner. His drawings also reflected his new style of the female form.

At the age of 23 he left France for the U.S. where he would live for the remainder of his life, which was cut short by leukemia at age 53.

Lachaise’s oeuvre spans the tumultuous period at the turn of the last century when art and culture, propelled by the upheavals of the two world wars, sought to redefine intellectual and aesthetic ideals. Considered a pioneer of American Modernism, Lachaise was part of New York’s early 20th century art scene, along with friends and colleagues like Joseph Stella, John Marin, Georgia O’Keefe and Paul Manship.

He and Manship worked together frequently on public projects including Rockefeller Center, where Lachaise produced a series of reliefs called Aspects of Mankind installed in 1933 along the sixth-floor façade of 1250 Avenue of the Americas) and "To Commemorate the Workmen of the Center" (unveiled above the entrance to 45 Rockefeller Plaza in 1935) remain proof of the artist's skilled techniques and contemporary aesthetic vision.
