In 1962, the Canadian philosopher and pop intellectual Marshall McLuhan coined the expression "global village".

According to McLuhan, the advent of electronic forms of communication would overthrow the regimes of time and space, compressing the vast geographical and psychic distances that once divided the globe into the parochial categories of nation, culture or tribe.
