Family breakups are best avoided -- but when they do happen, if the system was changed to one in which whoever got primary custody also had to bear the costs, there would be far fewer custody battles, and the children would be with the parent who _really_, _truly_, wanted to raise them.
Also, presently, men who are so devastated after a divorce that they need a few years off from the rat race, or who want a new non-money-oriented direction in life, _aren't allowed_ to do that. They are regarded by the system as ATMs, money machines, and are forbidden by "legal" dictates from stepping off the hamster wheel for even a day.
