Morning dude

I don't know if you followed my garden drama, but had a rat stealing my crops, and this morning had him in a trap!

Nice! What did you use for bait?

Cats are great for this. My cat catches lizards, mice, birds, and even got a bunny once. You don’t have to figure out what is eating your crops first and then plan a trap for that specific rodent.

Yeah, just have a mostly useless dog, alas. Neighborhood cat comes by often though, but is slacking apparently.

Used some sort of "sage cheese" I had in fridge. Worked on first try

Do you feed that cat?

Not directly, different neighbors do though. We have a bird feeder in same area, and it hunts birds regularly

Incentives brother. I think having your own cat is the best option but you gotta give that cat a reason to hang out near your home.

Yeah. Funny enough the neighborhood cat got injured a week or so ago, and increased garden attacks coincide with absence since. For now i cover plants and set up motion camera to see if another shows up. Surprising good system so far (h/t Rand)

Motion camera is real business 😂

💯 have some cats around.

Growing up there were always a handful of partially wild farm cats around for pest control. It's the reason humans have had such a close relationship with them for thousands of years 👍

I loved watching them hunt. Absolutely vicious, and amazingly agile. I prefer cats in this state, cuddly looking killers 😂

Hopefully neighborhood cat returns soon. In the meantime I'm staying vigilant

Oh yeah that fucker has to go lmao

Well I think I got him today, pic in this thread of body. Could be more 👀

Gd it im not adopting a cat!! Lol

After this convo though I may consider actively feeding neighborhood one in evening when I see it return

I'm not a cat expert but I don't think you can really own a cat. You kind of rent it only.

Good point. They really do have it good

Well I’m saying if you get a cat you can just feed it a couple times and then just put it outside. It’ll hang around for food.

Haha yeah, that's a bit too close to abandoning for me, and I know I'd end up with it in my bed days later. Plus, have a dog that is a bit of a selfish princess and doesn't care to share her space

Aww you got a soft spot for animals. Idk the way I look at is that most cats are put down by shelters because communities don’t want stray cats everywhere reproducing. So if you just put it in your backyard and feed it, its life is already infinitely better than most cats.

I think the way humans bred animals for their own benefit is fucking amazing. Just go on Craigslist and find a cat that isn’t fat. You can probably get one for really cheap. Take it in, feed it for a while then release it. It won’t ever go too far. Probably best to get a fixed one.

Animal shelters too. Lots of cats looking for a home usually.

Yea that’s also a good place but a lot of paperwork and a long process. They sometimes require things like fixing the cat and vaccinations.

You can find non kyc cats on Craigslist

Problem with cats is they shit in your garden. 😕

Cats where I am ate last only about a week outdoors

One of my cats when I was in high school shit in our garden and a rose bush grew out of it. Not the worse the thing in the world and they usually bury their shit.

True.

I wanted a some barn cats. But the cougars and coyotes get to them quick.

Yea that’s the downside. A few cats never came back and I think coyotes got them.

There was a cat I was seeing around here for about a week then I saw it in mouth of a cougar on the trail cam.

Nature can be cruel

Nature doesn’t care about you.
