This totally fucked with my head. What is the ‘it’ when we say “it is raining”? I guess we could say ‘it’ is the Earth but it feels more cosmic than that.

The Romantic languages are more clear:

Hace frio - "He is making cold"

Il pleut - "He is making rain."

Not sure about Italian.
