The primary problem for most of us is not that we doubt God too much; it’s that the reason we doubt God’s description of reality, including what is wrong with the world generally and with humanity (iow, our need) in particular is that we don’t doubt ourselves enough.

Despite a lifetime of evidence of our frailty and bias, we routinely and reflexively trust our own perceptions over and against the witness of wisdom and history.
