Daily Roman History:

In his youth Julius Caesar was taken prisoner by pirates while traveling around Greece. Far from being concerned for his current situation, Caesar treated it like any other vacation, composing songs about his captors, hosting poetry nights, and generally getting along quite well with them. When he heard they were requesting 20 gold talents for his ransom he was insulted and demanded they ask for at least 50. All the while he would say that when he was free he'd come back and kill them all, which the pirates naturally thought was a joke. But after being freed that is just what Caesar did, killing or selling his ex-captors into slavery.

it seems plausible... i personally have been in captivity in the past and was able to charm my captors and tormentors pretty good, or gain their cooperation by force if necessary, and i'm hardly a julius caesar with all his charisma

Yes. Well so says history. Might be a lie.
