While records show that the first investors in BCE were a group of Canadian businessmen including James Dunsmuir, William MacDonald, John Haynes, and Hugh Hutchison in 1906, there have been numerous changes in ownership over time. In 1907, a major reorganization occurred which led to the incorporation of BCE into BC Power, owned by BC Electric Company. This company was majority-owned by VLP and BCR. Other investors included the City of New Westminster as well as various individual shareholders. Other investors include the City of New Westminster, as well as various individual shareholders. 1947: The City of New Westminster sells its shares to BC Hydro. 1962: BCE is wholly owned by BC Power. 1983: BC Power merges with BC Electric Company (BCE) to form BC Hydro and Power Authority Act. 1994: The British Columbia Utilities Commission approves the privatization of BC Hydro, which results in a $20 billion buyout by the provincial government. 2015: BC Hydro becomes majority-owned by the provincial government, with the remaining shares held by individual shareholders and other corporations. 2019: #BC-Hydro is completely owned by the provincial government. 2021: The British Columbia Utilities Commission approves a new privatization plan for BC Hydro that includes a $50 billion buyout by the provincial government, with the remaining shares to be sold to the public over time. 2022: BC Hydro is still owned entirely by the provincial government.
