Funnily enough, messengers from back then had features that are now paywalled in Discord, half-implemented in Matrix and kinda-sorta there in Telegram. Animations and other features - which would be Gifs and Stickers these days - used to be solved problems. MSN even had voice messages, which only just landed in Discord and were a huge PITA in Matrix for a long time xD
How else were we meant to talk smack while LANing Quake and Warcraft 2? Haha.
