It really depends on your risk model. Managing the nuclear football? You probably want ECC.

worth noting that many motherboards may not support ECC (theyll accept the memory but wont have the benefit). so start with that first if you are building a system where data integrity is paramount

Can't say that I've ever had any regular non-ECC RAM fail in a PC. Never ever. But the convention has always been that you must use ECC RAM in a server.

Depends on how much you care about your data. At the RW that most consumers do, nah. If you're self hosting anything important it's probably a good idea.
