Another Nostr-only confession: When I hear/see 70% of parents interact with their children, I pity the children. Commandeering, yelling, irrational, gaslighting crazy people.

On the other hand, when I hear/see the amazing 10%, it is an inspiration for me to learn how to interact with my children and makes me hopeful for humanity.

Imagine you are in your 20s or 30s and you have an authority figure yelling at you: "Get out of water, NOW!" - "Why?" - "Because I said so!" - (looking weirdly) - "I am counting down!!!!! 10!! 9!! 8!! ...."

And now realize that compared to 20-30 year old, the 3-6 year old won't be able to tell themselves "what a bitch, screw you, you are insane" and just leave.

The 70% and the 10% are the same parents on different days.

Funny, but not true in my experience. While everyone has bad days, this is more symptomatic of a recurring problem (70%) / great parenting (10%) than a bad / good day.

I definitely become an authoritarian when my kids have pushed me beyond the limits of my patience. Your example drops an unaware adult into a child's position in this scenario. A more realistic view is that each parent/child relationship is full of give and take, and the relationship adapts over time. Excellence is a habit and parenting is no different. To do it well you need to focus on building a relationship of trust and respect that flows both ways.

I think what you describe as bad parenting is largely due to parents struggling in their own lives and this negatively impacts their relationship with their kids. Many also just don't seem to think very deeply about how they can do a better job. The causes are manifold but can be summarized into a few broad categories: insufficient resources to raise a child (time and money), insufficient support network, poor physical or mental well-being of the parents, etc. Having kids too young compounds these problems.

Of course these are probably the right reasons for bad parenting, but it's bad parenting nevertheless.

About patience, I like this quote: “if you have to tell a child something a thousand times, perhaps it is not the child who is the slow learner.” - Walter Barbe

Sometimes, you know, there's no other option.😄Because the bus is leaving and you said it already like five times. I'm tired of people targetting exhausted parents who barely hold their shit together. This doesn't help. That said, parents often really behave like dicks. My kids have awesome grandma and she still decides if they are cold in the pool and bitches around it constantly. The other grandma asks ME what they want to eat. How the hell am I supposed to know? Ask them, they are quite sentient. She's always in shock the children actually answer.🤦🏻‍♀️😄
