Simplex is good. I hear that. However, I find that self-hosting Simplex has some hang up points to a good UX for non-techies whom you wish to get on to your self-hosted Simplex server.
The non-techie user has to plug in all your self-hosted credentials (SMP, Coturn, etc.) and then turn off all the default servers of Simplex.
Matrix self-hosted is far more simple. The non-techie only needs your homesever URL and their user name and password. DONE.
That is why we run Matrix home server on our Sovran Pros. It is much easier to get people into your home server to create a private and anonymous community chat, calling, and video experience.
