A little Twitter History. Twitter/Odeo started with podcasting. Quickly crushed by Apple iTunes launch. Six weeks of hackathons. Twitter (originally Friend Stalker) was built in a day. Odeo shut down, assets sold. Became hot at SXSW 3 years later. Twitter should have been a protocol, NOT a company. Tried a federated version that failed.

Today we have Fediverse/Mastodon as a direct descendant.
